Sustainability

The rubber wood we use is a product taken from matured rubber trees. As the government is extending necessary infrastructure assistance to the community involved in rubber growing industry to make maximum use of this by – product and we also actively participating in this program extending whatever possible assistance required by them.

Sri Lanka Rubber industry mater plan presented in 2017 has identified Value added rubber wood sector as one of the major areas for development. Equally significant will be the Rubber Wood Value Addition strategy which has a program to set up five central wood processing units to supply high quality sawn rubber timber to local wood based industries. Accelerated replanting project will increase the future availability of rubber wood to be converted to higher value added products for export markets. Part of the rubber wood extracted will also serve the fuel needs of various industries including rubber products manufacturing. Rubber wood based products will earn over U$ 350 million by 2025.

Wellassa Rubber Company
At present, there is an acute shortage of rubber wood due to the low production of natural rubber as well as due to the increase in demand for these locally. In order to cater to this increase in demand, it was necessary to set long term targets to ensure the increase in the efficiencies in the production of natural rubber. Keeping in line with this national target, Samtessi has ( through DSI Group) entered into a partnership with several large dry/wet rubber product manufacturing companies on a long term project in collaboration with the government and other international funding agencies. The idea is to plant rubber with a gestation period of 07 years, in the Monaragala District, which is considered an under-developed area.
